Hello all,
No specific notes for rehearsal this week, just keep doing what you're doing. Concert is a week from this Sunday!
If you are interested in the concerto competition please sign up this week. Mr. Schaefer will have information and times for you. Please let me know what you intend to play if you've not done so already.
Finally, once again, a shameless plug for the Jackson Symphony concert this weekend, Saturday February 4, 7:30pm at the JCC Potter Center. I'm conducting the entire program and am very excited about it! Please feel free to come to any rehearsals as well. We rehearse Wednesday and Thursday night at the JSO building and Friday at the Potter Center, 7:30-10 each night.
Best,
David Schultz

Dear JYSO members,
THE GOOD:
We're off to a nice start playing some awesome (and awesomely difficult) music. Keep working hard. Learn your rhythms!
Next week will focus heavily on the two Bernstein pieces: Candide overture, and Mambo from West Side Story. Don't worry about up-to-tempo just yet, keep things secure but comfortable.
THE BAD:
Eleven people were absent from the last rehearsal, few of whom notified us of their absence.
This sort of behavior simply cannot continue. It is disrespectful to me, disrespectful to your colleagues, and ultimately disrespectful to your audience. Understand we have the potential to be an amazing ensemble. With the amount of talent and experience we have this year... but it can only go as far as what we give to it. I leave the choice to you.
THE UGLY:
Actually, not ugly at all. Quite beautiful. Maybe just ugly in how good it is. Keep in mind, this is a youth symphony, students your age. Watch and be inspired:

Hello all, great first rehearsal back! Nice to return to the building and start the year off right with some good music making.
Schedule for next rehearsal, Sunday 1/15, 3-5pm:
3:00 - break, An American in Paris, detailed rehearsal
break - 4:45, sight read new music
4:45 - 5:00, Overture to Candide, review
As discussed at the end of rehearsal, please focus on RHYTHMS this week. Lots of tricky rhythms all over both pieces; just figuring out what they are in your head is half the battle. Much of your best practice can be without your instrument, just looking at the part. Try to sing everything first, then try to play it.
Lastly, here are some recordings for your study/enjoyment. Have a good week!
